The Force Behind the Power is a 1991 album, released by Diana Ross on the Motown label. Featuring production from the likes of James Anthony Carmichael who used to work with The Commodores and Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder and Peter Asher, the album saw Ross moving in a more adult contemporary direction[says who?]. The album yielded the top 40 R&B ballad, "When You Tell Me That You Love Me", which also made UK #2. Although the album was not as successful in the USA, it was a double platinum hit (600,000 copies sold) in the U.K. and yielded 5 top 40 hits, including the second UK Top 10 single from the album, "One Shining Moment", which made UK #10.

The song "If We Hold On Together" was prominently featured in Don Bluth's 1988 animated children's film The Land Before Time. It rose to prominence after released as a single worldwide in 1989 (most prominently in Japan in 1990, after it was used as the theme song for the TBS drama Omoide ni Kawaru Made).[2] It reached #4 on the Japanese single charts, and in total sold over 465,000 copies.[3][4] Jordin Sparks performed the song on a 2007 episode of American Idol.

The international edition of The Force Behind the Power has two additional tracks, "No Matter What You Do," which is a duet with Al B. Sure! peaked at #4 (U.S.), and "You And I".

The album was successful enough internationally that Ross' "Here and Now" Tour lasted nearly 2 years garnering television specials, gold and platinum certifications in the U.K. to Japan to Australia.
